Melissa Wilks, Data Management Supervisor, MPP

Melissa Wilks

Melissa Wilks is the senior education analyst leading the QIP team working on data management for the Department of Education’s EDFacts initiative, which collects K12 performance data from state education agencies. Her work includes data analysis, data quality reviews, data usage and systems training, and EDFacts public file production.

As part of the EDFacts Technical Support Services contract, Melissa provides training to Department of Education staff on the use of EDFacts data and systems. She conducts data quality reviews on high school graduation rates and assessment data. Melissa has worked with the Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Healthy Schools (OSHS) to refine and document its data quality processes on homeless student data and continues to work with OSHS and QIP colleagues to produce district-level homeless student data files for public use.

“Using data to drive decisionmaking only makes sense when those data are used both responsibly and intelligently,” Melissa says. “I highly value the work I have done with the Department of Education to improve data quality, create products for both public and internal use, and enhance data literacy.”

Prior to joining QIP, Melissa was an acquisitions editor for an academic publishing company, specializing in books on political science, religious studies, and geography. She holds a BA in Government and Linguistics from the College of William and Mary, and an MPP in Public Policy from the University of Maryland, with a concentration in social policy. She lives in DC and spends her free time dominating trivia nights, leading a book club, going to plays and museums, volunteering as an adult literacy tutor, and traveling.
